Biographical Information[edit]

Derrick Turnbow is the only pitcher ever to save his team's first four games of a season (2006). Salomon Torres, 2007, is the only other pitcher with even three such saves. Torres and Turnbow, it should be noted, were briefly teammates for the 2008 Milwaukee Brewers.

Turnbow had an outstanding season in 2005, going 7-1 with 39 saves and a 1.74 ERA and striking out 64 batters in 67 innings. He turned in a decent first half in 2006, saving 23 games although with a high 4.74 ERA. He was still named to the All-Star team, but he really began to struggle in the second half, posting an ERA of 11.29, and saving a single game while being charged with 5 losses. He was a half-decent set-up man for new closer Francisco Cordero in 2007, with a 4.63 ERA in 67 outings. The bottom fell out completely in 2008, however, as Turnbow struggled terribly, to a point where the Brewers had an 8-men bullpen in April, because he could only be used in mop-up situations. After a particularly atrocious outing in which he gave up 6 runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Chicago Cubs to bring his season's ERA over 15.00, he was designated for assignment on May 2nd.
