Biographical Information[edit]

Brother of yarn spinner and pitcher Dan Casey, Dennis Casey had a 129 OPS+ in two seasons. In 1884, he did well in limited action in a season when lots of players were getting tryouts due to the presence of the Union Association. The next year, he dazzled for the Baltimore Orioles, leading the team in average, OBP and slugging with a .288/.347/.398 line. He was benched late in June because his baserunning was not up to snuff and he swung too frequently at pitches not in the strike zone. He was released a month later and never returned. In the 1930s, brother Dan began claiming that he was the model for Casey of Casey at the Bat - when this theory did not gain support, Dan claimed he was the source.
