Biographical Information

David Steffler was drafted twice and pitched for Team Canada.

Steffler was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 51st round of the 1994 amateur draft out of high school, one pick ahead of Larry Barnes. He was a draft-and-follow but the Jays decided not to sign him. Transferring to Winthrop University, he was 1-5 with a 5.37 ERA in 1997. The Jays took him again, in the 67th round of the 1997 amateur draft, their last pick of the year. He improved to 11-3, 3.21 in 1998 and was All-Big South Conference.

In the 1998 Baseball World Cup, he allowed four runs (three earned) in 6 1/3 IP in a loss to Francisco Rayo and Nicaragua, pitching the one game for Canada. He was 9-4 with a 4.54 ERA as a senior. He was among the Winthrop University top-10 in wins and strikeouts for a career and would later make their Hall of Fame. He was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA for the Vienna Wanderers of the Austrian Baseball League in 1999 and hit .403/.479/.629. In a high-offense league, he did make the top 10 in any offensive department. He later played briefly in Canada's Intercounty Baseball League, going 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA for the 2010 Ottawa Fat Cats.
