Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher David Richardson was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 17th round of the 2010 amateur draft, out of junior college. He never played at a higher level than AA in organized baseball, but has had an extensive career in Mexico, the independent leagues and the winter leagues.
His first two professional seasons in 2010 and 2011 were spent with the GCL Orioles, with records of 0-2, 10.80, and 2-1, 169 in 12 and 13 games respectively. In 2012, he was moved to the starting rotation with the Aberdeen Iron Birds of the New York-Penn League, going 3-4, 5.58 in 15 games. He moved back to the bullpen in 2013, when he made just 2 starts in 18 appearances between Aberdeen and the Delmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League. He finished at 2-2, 7.34. Still, the Orioles kept him around even if he largely struggled, sending him to Delmarva for a full season in 2014, where he went 0-0, 1.95 in 18 games in relief. His season ended early because of an injury and in 2015 he was back at the bottom of the ladder, making 15 appearances where it had all started five years earlier, with the GCL Orioles, going 2-1, 1.23.
2016 was his make-or-break season in the Orioles system. Healthy again, he had to demonstrate success at a higher level, but the results were mixed. He was 4-6, 4.13 in 21 games for the Frederick Keys in the High-A Carolina League, but struggled in AA with the Bowie BaySox in the Eastern League, where he had a 5.68 ERA in 6 games. He became a free agent after the season, but not only did the Orioles let him go, but he had look to the independent Can-Am Association to find a job, ending up with the New Jersey Jackals in 2017. He had quite a good year, going 7-4, 3.34 in 20 starts, then played for the Santurce Crabbers of the Puerto Rican League after the season, tying for the league lead in strikeouts and helping the team reach the 2018 Caribbean Series. That got him some visibility in Latin American baseball circles, and an opportunity to pitch in the Mexican League for the Pericos de Puebla in 2018. Combining his results over two half-seasons, he was 4-4, 3.20 in 32 games. With Santurce in 2018-19, he had one of his career highlights on January 20th when he was the winning pitcher in a 4-3 win over the Indios de Mayagüez that secured Santurce its record 20th Puerto Rican League title. He again appeared in the Caribbean Series that year.
David was back in the Can-Am Association in 2019, splitting time between New Jersey and the Capitales de Québec, but went just 2-7 in spite of a decent 3.77 ERA. That winter he played a third season for Santurce. He was then forced into inactivity in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down the minor leagues, including most independent leagues as well. The Puerto Rican league also skipped the season, so it was with the Bravos de Margarita in the Venezuelan League that he played that winter. In 2021, he was back in Mexico, splitting the season between Puebla and the Acereros de Monclova, then spent the winter in the Mexican Pacific League with the Charros de Jalisco. He had another nomadic season in 2022, with stops with Puebla, the Algodoneros de Union Laguna and the Aguila de Veracruz, all in the Mexican League, and with Québec, which was now playing in the Frontier League. Altogether, he was 3-5, 6.36 in 21 games.
