Biographical Information

Brother of Spike Owen, Dave Owen had four seasons in the big leagues, mostly with the Chicago Cubs. He was part of the 1984 Cubs team that won the division, although he did not appear in post-season play.

He was the first major leaguer to come from the University of Texas at Arlington. Picked by the Cubs in the 10th round of the 1979 amateur draft, he moved up the ladder in the Cubs minor league organization, hitting over .300 in 10 games for the Gulf Coast Cubs in 1979 and in 125 games for the Midland Cubs in 1982. While he was up with the Cubs each year from 1983 to 1985, he was also also spending time in Iowa those years. After his time with the Cubs, he spent three more years in Triple A, first with the Oklahoma City 89ers and then with the Omaha Royals.

The Cubs had been doormats for a long time before 1984, and fans realized things had changed on June 23rd when the Cubs, who were down 7-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals, came back to win 12-11 in extra innings. Dave Owen knocked in the winning run.

He worked in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league organization. As a Phillies scout, he signed Michael Bourn.

He was the bench coach for Trey Hillman's 2007 Nippon Ham Fighters. On October 23, 2007, he was named the Kansas City Royals bench coach for 2008, following Hillman back to the USA.
