Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Darrel Campbell has played for the Nicaraguan national team for about a decade. He has won several batting titles in Nicaragua.

He debuted in the 2009 Baseball World Cup, going 1 for 6 with a walk, two runs but two errors in four chances, backing up veteran Edgard López at short. His hit came off Venezuela's Erick Arteaga. He was 2 for 13 with a double and a run while playing about half the time at third base in the 2011 Baseball World Cup; he had 1 putout, 14 assists and no errors. His hits both came against Australia - the double off Ryan Searle and the single off Andrew Russell. In 2013, he hit .413 for Costa Caribe to win his first batting title in Nicaragua. He played for Nicaragua when they won the 2013 Central American Games. He followed with another in 2014 at .434; he also led the league with 13 game-winning RBI (tied with López) and 28 intentional walks. In the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, he batted .286/.348/.333 for the Silver Medalists, stealing two bases in two tries and handling 21 chances error-free between 3B and SS. He was third in error-free chances at 3B (behind Pedro Feliz and Luis la O) and second at SS (behind Jorge Bishop). He also was third in the event in steals, trailing Luis la O and Aldo Méndez.

Campbell claimed his third straight batting title in 2015, with a .430 average. Nemesio Porras had been the last player to win three straight Nicaraguan batting title (1992-1994). He hit .238/.273/.238 in the 2015 Pan American Games, while splitting 3B with Ofilio Castro and DH with Justo Rivas. In the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he produced at a .214/.353/.286 clip with two runs in four games, one run behind team leader Dwight Britton. He came up big in game 1 versus Germany; down 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, he singled off Enorbel Márquez and came around to score the tying run on a double by Alex Blandino as Nicaragua rallied to win. He dazzled in the 2017 Central American Games, going 6 for 12 with 5 walks, 3 steals, 6 runs and 5 RBI in 4 games in the round-robin phase; he led in average (.024 ahead of Juan Colato) and OBP (.058 ahead of Castro), tied for 4th in walks and tied for 3rd in steals (one behind Colato and Andrés Aguilar). In the Gold Medal Game, he hit 2nd and went 0 for 3 with a sacrifice hit as Nicaragua won 3-1 over Panama.
