Biographical Information

Edgard López got over 1,000 hits in Nicaragua's amateur leagues and has often played for his country in international competition.

López helped Nicaragua to a Silver Medal in the 1997 Central American Games. He was 12 for 19 with two triples, four runs, three walks, two RBI and a steal in five games for a 1-4 Nicaraguan entry in the 1998 Haarlem Baseball Week. He led the event in average and OBP and tied Shinnosuke Abe for 7th in slugging; he led in triples and was second to Carlos Tabares in hits. He outshone numerous stars like Orestes Kindelán, Omar Linares and Antonio Pacheco.

In the 1998 Baseball World Cup, the 23-year-old hit .452/.500/.786 with 3 homers and 12 runs in 10 games. His 19 hits tied Jenrry Roa and Robelquis Videaux for the most in the event. He won All-Star honors at shortstop, one of only three non-Cubans chosen (Chin-Yuan Chen and Jurriaan Lobbezoo were the other two). Among those he beat was Tomohiro Nioka. He was only 1 for 5 from the leadoff spot in the Bronze Medal game but Nicaragua still took home the Medal by topping Italy 5-1. He hit .240 in the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games, when Nicaragua took the Silver Medal.

López hit .308 in the 1999 Pan American Games, leading Nicaragua's attack for the third straight event. In the 2001 Baseball World Cup, the little infielder batted .258/.281/.452 with 7 RBI in 7 games. He was 8 for 29 in the 2003 Pan American Games. During the 2003 Baseball World Cup, Edgard eked out a .216/.293/.351 batting line; 5 of his 8 hits were doubles. He helped Nicaragua win Gold at the 2006 Central American Games and was named the All-Star at 2B.

López was 4 for 11 with three runs in the 2007 Pan American Games as one of Nicaragua's top performers. He hit .222/.344/.407 in the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup to help his country win a spot in the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
