Biographical Information[edit]
On Sparky Anderson's Cincinnati Reds, "The Big Red Machine", there were Stars (Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez and Pete Rose) and there were Turds (everyone else). Darrel Chaney reveled in being a Turd. In fact, according to Joe Posnanski's chronicle of the championship '75 season, The Machine, Darrel had Turd t-shirts printed up for his teammates. A bench player with not much of a bat (.217/.296/.288 in 915 games), Darrel was a bit player for Cincinnati, spelling Dave Concepcion and Morgan in his first six seasons and appearing in three World Series, earning a ring in his third trip. He was dealt to the Atlanta Braves in the ensuing offseason for Mike Lum and enjoyed his lone season as a regular (.252/.324/.331 in 153 games in 1976) before finishing his career with three seasons in his more familiar role.
In 1967, while playing in the minors, Darrel missed much of the season due to military service. After baseball, he became a motivational speaker.
Notable Achievement[edit]
- Won a World Series with the Cincinnati Reds in 1975
