Dan Gausepohl is an uncle of Mike Fitzgerald and played for four years in the minors, reaching AAA.

Gausepohl was taken by the California Angels in the 7th round of the January 1976 draft and did not sign. Returning to community college, he was a 21st round choice of the New York Mets in the 1977 amateur draft. Again unsigned, he went on to UCLA. The San Diego Padres snatched him in the 10th round of the 1979 amateur draft.

Gausepohl debuted as a pro with the 1979 Walla Walla Padres and hit .246/.327/.355 with 17 steals in 26 tries as a starting outfielder. In 1980, he did well with the Reno Silver Sox, posting a batting line of .303/.396/.439 with 102 runs, 9 triples, 92 RBI, 79 walks and 29 stolen bases (in 36 tries). He had 20 outfield assists, leading the California League. He was 7th in the league in average, right behind Candy Maldonado.

In 1981, Gausepohl moved up to the AA Amarillo Gold Sox and batted .269/.385/.409 with 13 steals in 15 tries. He had 17 outfield assists despite playing under 100 games, competing for time with Tony Gwynn and Jim Steels among others.

Gausepohl split 1982 between Amarillo (.229/.383/.271 in 16 games) and the Hawaii Islanders (.226/.329/.361 in 64 games).
