Biographical Information[edit]

Dalier Hinojosa pitched for the Indios de Guantánamo and Cuban national team before defecting.

The right-hander was 1-2 with a 6.44 ERA in 2007-2008. Through that season, his third, his career record was 7-15 with a save and a 5.65 ERA in 48 career games. In 2008-2009, Hinojosa improved to 7-4, 3.61 as the top Indios hurler. He tied for 6th in the Cuban Serie Nacional with four complete games.

The young right-hander was 9-6 with a 4.07 ERA in 2009-2010. He was 4th in the league with 99 strikeouts, trailing only Vladimir García, Odrisamer Despaigne and Yulieski González. He tied for the lead with six complete games, even with Maikel Folch, Norberto González, Fidel Romero and Yulieski González.

In the 2010 World University Championship, Hinojosa threw a 7-inning mercy rule perfect game against Sri Lanka, fanning 16 in the process. In his only other appearance in the event, he walked the two batters he faced. Cuba went on to take the Gold Medal. He played for Cuba in the 2010 Pan American Games Qualifying Tournament; the team won spots in both the 2011 Baseball World Cup and 2011 Pan American Games. He then threw another mercy rule perfecto against a third-rate Asian power, blanking the Hong Kong national team in a five-inning perfect game at the 2010 Intercontinental Cup.

He defected from Cuba in the summer of 2013 and on October 20th signed a multi-year deal with the Boston Red Sox worth $25.4 million. While it was a minor league contract, he was also invited to take part in spring training in 2014. He was assigned to the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox to begin his professional career. He pitched 41 games, all as a reliever, going 3-5, 3.71 with 3 saves. He logged 61 2/3 innings, allowing only 39 hits but 33 walks. he did strike out 65 batters. He was back with Pawtucket at the start of 2015 but received a call to Boston in early May. He made his debut on May 3rd and pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief against the New York Yankees, closing out an 8-5 loss; he did not allow a hit or a run, but walked three batters and struck out a pair. After the game, he returned to Pawtucket. It turned out to be his only major league appearance in a Red Sox uniform, as on July 15th, he was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies. He received a longer look in Philly and made the most of his audition, allowing only 2 earned runs in 23 innings and going 2-0 in 18 appearances. That gave him an overall pitching line for the season of 2-0, 0.73 with 23 Ks in 24 2/3 innings.

Hinojosa seemed on the verge of a nice second career in the majors at that point, but injuries got the best of him. He started the season with the Phillies in 2016 and in 10 games at the major league level went 0-1, 3.27. However, he was sent to the disabled list at the end of April, then spent time back in Class A with the Clearwater Threshers on a rehabilitation assignment. He still pitched well in AAA, going 1-3, 2.96 in 22 games for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, but was not called back to Philadelphia when rosters expanded in September and was released by the Phillies the following May without ever pitching professionally again.
