Biographical Information

Pitcher Dale Alderson attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, from 1939 to 1942, when he began his career with the Zanesville Cubs of the Class C Middle Atlantic League in 1942. He began 1943 pitching for the Nashville Volunteers in the Southern Association before being called up by the Chicago Cubs and making his major league debut on September 18. In July 1944, he was optioned back to Nashville where he enlisted the Navy (though he had twice been previously rejected because of a kidney ailment). He was not inducted until October 2 and finished the season with Nashville. He was sent to Naval Training Center in San Diego and remained there until discharged on October 19, 1945, as a Seaman 1c. In 1946, he was back with the Cubs but optioned to Nashville. He pitched a total of 16 games for the Cubs, primarily wearing number 31. Alderson was an Iowa school teacher in the offseason.
