Biographical Information[edit]
Dae-yeon Hwang played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 7 years. His son In-jun Hwang also pitched in the KBO.
Hwang played for the South Korean national team in the 1986 Amateur World Series, 1987 Intercontinental Cup, 1988 Baseball World Cup and 1988 Olympics. In the '88 Cup, he batted .222/.300/.333 with 8 runs in 11 games, fielding .955 as their starting shortstop. His 45 assists led the event, two ahead of Robert Eenhoorn. The Binggrae Eagles selected him in the first round of the 1989 KBO draft, and he hit .196/.267/.292 in 107 games in his first season. He recorded a .226/.300/.349 batting line in 1990, and he crushed 16 homers with a .248/.354/.461 batting line in 1991.
He missed most of the next two seasons due to the military service, and he played 55 games with a .258/.294/.346 batting line in 1994 as Jun Heo's backup. He blasted 11 homers with a .223/.283/.392 batting line in 1995, then the Eagles traded him to the LG Twins for Bong-soo Kang in the middle of the 1996 season. Hwang ended up hitting .200/.262/.292 in '96, and he announced his retirement after spending the entire 1997 season in the minors. He was the minor league fielding coach of the Eagles from 2003 to 2004, and he later coached Bugil Academy, Daejeon High School (2009-2011) and Woosuk University (2012-2014).
Overall, Hwang hit .226/.299/.369 with 299 hits and 41 homers in 7 seasons in the KBO.
