Biographical Information[edit]
A South Carolina native, pitcher D.J. Mattox attended Anderson University, where he went 5-5 with 44 strikeouts in 2001. He was then selected by the New York Mets in the 11th round of the 2001 amateur draft. After going 26-14 with a 3.13 ERA in 3 seasons in their organization, he was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2003 Rule V draft. However, he missed the entire 2004 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He played in the Reds chain in 2005, and after a stint in the independent leagues, he pitched in the Kansas City Royals organization in 2007. After playing in the independent Atlantic League in 2008, he went 8-6 in 16 starts for the El Paso Diablos of the American Association in 2010.
Mattox joined the coaching staff at his alma mater for the 2011 season.
