Biographical Information[edit]
Cristian Perez was the youngest coach in the majors when he was appointed as assistant bullpen coach with responsibility for advance scouting before the 2019 season, when he was just 23. He did not have the traditional profile of a coach, as he had never played professionally, instead serving in the league economics and operations department in the Commissioner's office, from where the Reds hired him in 2018 following the appointment of David Bell as their new manager. Perez had focused on international player acquisitions during his time with MLB headquarters, also working on the coordination of international drug and safety programs. He had previously worked as an intern for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
With the Reds, he joked that he had grown a beard in order not to appear too young. He did have some playing experience, playing three years as a catcher for Duke University and one at the University of Southern California. His studies were his first focus, however, and he was named on the All-ACC Academic team in 2015, before graduating with a degree in sociology and economics from Duke, and a master's degree from USC. He stayed as a coach until the end of the 2022 season.
