Biographical Information[edit]
Second baseman Crash Davis played for the Philadelphia Athletics from 1940 to 1942. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he returned to pro baseball in 1946 but never made it back to the majors. In 1948, he hit .315 with the Durham Bulls and set a Carolina League record with 50 doubles.
Davis earned his nickname as a youngster when he ran into an outfielder while attempting to catch a fly ball. Years later, the nickname earned him fame when the makers of the movie "Bull Durham" used it (with his permission) as the name of Kevin Costner's character.
Davis died of cancer at age 82.
