Biographical Information

Cord Phelps made his major league debut in 2011.

Phelps was a scholar-athlete in high school, finishing as his school's salutatorian with a 4.83 GPA. He hit .415 as a high school senior and led his team in hits (33), OBP (.581), walks (24), doubles (9) and average, winning team MVP honors. He was named the 2005 Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable Athlete of the Year.

As a freshman, Cord was a 2B/3B for Stanford, hitting .196/.262/.196 and fielding .944. That summer, he batted .276 for the Amsterdam Mohawks and he made the New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star team. Phelps improved to .301/.376/.425 as a sophomore, starting at least 8 games at every infield position except first base. In 2008, Phelps hit 13 homers after not going deep his first two years. He also led the club with 41 walks and hit .351/.445/.587 with 76 runs in 63 games. Only first-round draft pick Jason Castro posted a better OPS for Stanford in '08. He helped Stanford make the Final Four in the 2008 College World Series, nearly hitting for a cycle against the University of Miami.

The Cleveland Indians selected Phelps in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Don Lyle and made his pro debut that summer. Phelps split 2008 between the GCL Indians (0 for 3, RBI, 2 K) and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (.312/.376/.454). Baseball America rated him as the #19 prospect in the New York-Penn League, the top-ranked second baseman.

Phelps made his major league debut with the Indians in 2011.
