Biographical Information[edit]

Cole Irvin made his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2019. A pitcher, he has the nice nickname "Swirvin Irvin".

He was born in Yorba Linda, CA, also the birthplace of Richard Nixon. Cole was drafted in the 5th round of the 2016 amateur draft out of the University of Oregon. One round later, Stephen Nogosek was also drafted from Oregon, and also made his major league debut in 2019. Irvin went 14-4 for the 2018 Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

After two seasons with Philadelphia, he was purchased by the Oakland Athletics before the 2021 season. He was a regular starter that year, with his 32 starts being tied for the American League lead. He also led the circuit with 15 losses and 195 hits allowed, but he was actually pretty much a league-average starter, going 10-15 with an ERA of 4.24 and an ERA+ of 96 (which is just about average for a starting pitcher). He also struck out 125 batters in 178 1/3 innings, against 42 walks.

Through 2019, he was the only major leaguer with the last name Irvin except for Hall of Famer Monte Irvin. They were joined by Jake Irvin in 2023.
