Biographical Information

Jorge Torres hit .200 for the Cuban national team that won Gold in the 1938 Central American and Caribbean Games. was MVP of the 1939 Amateur World Series, when Cuba won their first Amateur World Series. He only hit .174 but got the winning hit in an extra-inning victory against Nicaragua. Cocoliso debuted in the Cuban Winter League in 1940-1941 with Santa Clara and Habana, hitting .238 as an infielder.

He was on the Cuban squad that played the Brooklyn Dodgers when they visited Cuba early in 1941. In 1941-1942, he batted .287 and slugged .329 as a utility man for the champion Almendares club; while he played both infield and outfield, he was playing almost every day, not a bench man. He again played against the Dodgers when they returned to Cuba in '42. He fell to .193/?/.204 as the main second baseman for Cienfuegos and for Almendares.

Back with Cienfuegos in 1944-1945, he again started at 2B and hit .295 and slugged .309. Only Pedro Pagés and Alejandro Crespo had better averages on the team. He was 2 for 8 for the Mexican League's Tuneros de San Luis in 1946. In 1946-1947, he was a bench player for Habana, going 1 for 9 with a double. A utility man for the Tuneros in '47, he batted .234/~.287/.289 in 101 games.

Torres hit .236 for the Havana Reds in the 1946-1947 Federacion season. In the 1947-1948 Cuban Players League, he hit .191 between the Leones and Santiago.
