Biographical Information[edit]

Clay Zavada was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 30th round of the 2006 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Mike Daughtry and made his pro debut that summer.

After one season with the Missoula Osprey, Zavada asked for his release to help out his family after his father died. Zavada sat out the 2007 season, but was interested in playing again so the Diamondbacks helped him catch on with the Southern Illinois Miners of the independent Frontier League. He posted a 1.72 ERA in 16 relief innings for the Miners in 2008 when the Diamondbacks re-acquired him with an unofficial trade. Trades with independent clubs aren't permited by MLB, so the Diamondbacks released Brad Miller so he could sign with Southern Illinois. Zavada finished the year with the South Bend Silver Hawks.
