Biographical Information[edit]

Chung-Yu Chen has caught in the CPBL. His brother Chung-Ting Chen also played in CPBL. [1]

Chen was 9 for 28 with 4 RBI in 2013 World Junior Championship.[2]He was on Taiwan's squad in the 2016 Haarlem Baseball Week and in the 2016 U-23 Baseball World Cup. He hit 2 dingers in consecutive games in the latter. [3] He also was in the 2017 Universiade, where he hit .360/.452/.560 with a homer and 4 RBI. [4]

Chen was a 1st-round pick of the Uni-President Lions in the 2017 CPBL draft. [5] He played 23 games that year, and got 14 hits in 53 at bats. Chen soon became the starter of the Lions, batted .318/.362/.350 with 32 RBI, and was selected into the All-Star game in his rookie year. He also won his first Best Ten award this year as the league's top catcher.

However, Chen was not effective on defense. While he made some outrageous errors in 2019, the Lions decided to replaced him with Gold Glove winner Dai-An Lin, and Chen never won back the starting catcher spot again. He hit .272/.345/.350 with 3 homers and spent most time as a outfielder. When Chieh-Hsien Chen was moved to the outfield because of YIPS, Chen completely lost any chance to became a everyday player. He mainly reversed in 2021 and batted career-worst .265/.331/.301. He caught Tim Melville's no-hitter on April 2. In 2022, the batting condition of Chen declined again, as he was .229/.282/.312 with only 63 game played.
