Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Chuck Mathews played in the Houston Astros system from 1983 to 1986. He was originally drafted by the club in the 11th round of the 1983 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Mike Raczka and ahead of future All-Stars Doug Drabek and Kevin Seitzer. He pitched for the Auburn Astros his first year, going 7-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 13 starts, completing 6 of them. In 1984, he went 13-7, 3.54 in 27 starts for the Daytona Beach Astros and in 1985, he went 12-6, 3.18 in 29 games (22 starts) for the Osceola Astros. He moved to Double-A for the first time in 1986, where he faltered, going 5-6 with a 6.01 mark in 41 games (4 starts) for the Columbus Astros. Overall, Mathews went 37-22 with a 3.71 ERA in 110 games (66 starts). In 506 1/3 innings, he allowed 546 hits and 136 walks (1.347 WHIP), while striking out 249 batters.
