Biographical Information

Chris Newell played three years of baseball with the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats before turning professional. In 1997-1998 he played for the Tennessee Walkers, Anderson Lawmen, and Kalamazoo Kodiaks and earned a gold glove as a second baseman with the Kodiaks. Newell completed his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and exercise science at the University of Michigan.

Since his playing days ended, Newell has enjoyed a varied coaching career. In late 1999 he founded The Players Edge training facility which he continues to operate as of 2021. Newell served as an associate scout with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from April, 1999 through 2005 and the New York Yankees from 2006 to May, 2016. He entered the college coaching ranks as a hitting coach for the Oakland University Grizzlies from 2002-2005. Newell gained managing experience with the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers from 2016-2019. The Beavers are part of the United Shore Professional Baseball League located in southeastern Michigan. Jim Essian and Paul Noce also managed in this league and Rich Donnelly was a coach during the 2016 season. In addition, Newell was the manager and infield coordinator in 2017-2018 for the British Columbia Bombers of the California Winter League which is a developmental league.

In 2020 the New York Mets hired Newell to manage the Kingsport Mets of the Appalachian League before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the minor league season. Newell was the Mets' St. Lucie Rehab coach in 2021. He was bench coach of the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2022. Newell finally assumed a managerial role with Brooklyn in 2023.
