Biographical Information[edit]

Chris Johnson pitched in the minor and independent leagues from 1987 to 1996. He spent part or all of five seasons at Double-A, never advancing beyond that level.

He was the Milwaukee Brewers' second-round pick in the 1987 amateur draft, taken between pitchers Richie Lewis and Jeremy Hernandez and a couple slots ahead of future star Albert Belle (and also ahead of notable outfielder Derek Bell). He was 5-0 with a 4.03 ERA for the Helena Brewers his first year, then posted a smattering of solid seasons as his career progressed. He was 9-9, 3.18 for the Beloit Brewers in 1989 and 13-6, 2.98 for the Stockton Ports in 1990, leading Baseball America to rank him the #8 prospect in the Brewers chain going into 1991. He wavered and was traded to the Montreal Expos for minor league outfielder Scott Bryant partway through the 1991 campaign. After a stint in the Expos system, he moved to the Chicago Cubs organization, posting a 3.05 ERA in 20 relief appearances in 1994 and a 3.45 mark in 46 games in 1995. He pitched briefly for the Newburgh Night Hawks of the independent Northeast League league in 1996 to wrap up his career.

Overall, Johnson went 58-48 with a 3.73 ERA in 225 games (132 starts). In 891 1/3 innings, he allowed 873 hits and 332 (1.352 WHIP), while striking out 673 batters. A decent hitter, he hit .250 in 24 at-bats.
