Biographical Information[edit]

Chris Fetter pitched in the San Diego Padres chain from 2009-2012. He became a coach with the San Antonio Missions in 2013, and later a major league pitching coach.

Fetter was redshirted as a college freshman in 2005. In 2006, he was 5-2 with a 2.22 ERA and was All-Big Ten Conference. He led the Big Ten in ERA and was 27th in NCAA Division I. The next season, Chris fell to 6-3, 4.71. He was 0-1 with a 4.54 ERA for the Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod League. He was sharp in 2008 at 10-2, 2.47 for Michigan with a .209 average. He again was All-Conference and led in wins, ERA and innings (95). Matt Bashore, Zach Putnam and Matt Bischoff got the other All-Conference slots, with Putnam taking home Pitcher of the Year honors. In Division I, Fetter was tied for 20th in wins and tied for 28th in ERA. He was drafted one spot ahead of Brock Holt when the San Diego Padres chose him in the 9th round of the 2009 amateur draft. Jeff Stewart was the scout.

The tall righty split the summer of 2009 between the Eugene Emeralds (2-0, 6 Sv, 1.33, 54 K in 40 2/3 IP, .79 WHIP) and the Fort Wayne Tincaps (2-1, Sv, 2.22). He tied for 7th in the Northwest League in saves and would have led in ERA had he qualified. Moving up to the Lake Elsinore Storm in 2010, he only pitched four games (1-1, 6.00), limited by injury. He was 1-6 with a 5.80 ERA for the 2011 Storm, hammered at a .329 average. He split 2012 between Eugene (2.08 ERA in 6 G), Fort Wayne (0-1, 2.20 in 6 G) and Lake Elsinore (0-2, 4.35 in 3 G) to end his career. Overall, he had gone 6-11 with 7 saves and a 3.56 ERA in 51 games.

After retiring as a player, Fetter remained involved with baseball in a variety of roles. His first job in 2013 was as a coach with the San Antonio Missions. Later that year he joined the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a scout and stayed in that role through 2015. Fetter moved back to coaching in 2016 as the pitching coach for Ball State University but only stayed one season. The Los Angeles Dodgers lured him away in late 2016 for a minor league pitching coordinator position where he stayed until July, 2017. On July 24, 2017 he returned to the University of Michigan as their pitching coach and Fetter remained with the Wolverines until late 2020.

On November 6, 2020, the Detroit Tigers hired Fetter as their pitching coach for the 2021 season and he continued in this role through 2023.
