Biographical Information

Chick Shorten played with Babe Ruth in Boston, with Ty Cobb in Detroit, with George Sisler in St. Louis, and with Edd Roush in Cincinnati. Usually a back-up, he is listed as the regular right fielder for the 1920 Detroit Tigers although Ira Flagstead actually played more games in right field (Shorten had more games overall in the outfield, though).

Shorten hit .571 in two games in the 1916 World Series. He batted third in Game 3 of the Series, going 3-for-4. He again batted third in Game 5, the last game, going 1-for-3.

After his playing career he was a scout for the Cleveland Indians from 1950 to 1959.

One source claims that Shorten put a curse on the Red Sox after they put Babe Ruth in right field in his place, hence explaining why the Red Sox did not win the World Series for so many decades. [1]

Shorten hit .339 for the 1925 Reading Keystones, a team which also featured Moe Berg. He was later player-manager for the team.
