Biographical Information

Chick Holmes pitched two games in relief in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1918. In his first game, the opposing pitcher was Walter Johnson. The database does not show him ever pitching in the minors,

The manager of the Athletics, Connie Mack, tried out several young pitchers in 1918. Seven youngsters, all between the ages of 19 and 23, where given up to three games to show their stuff. The one who looked the best, 19-year-old Vic Keen, did not pitch again with the Athletics but several years later went on to have a career in the National League. Another of the group, 22-year-old Tom Zachary, who was the same age as Chick Holmes, didn't pitch again either for the Athletics, but the following summer signed with the Washington Senators and went on to have a very long career in the majors. One 19-year-old was given more games than the others: William Pierson had eight appearances, but in two more years with the team, he got into only three more games in total.
