Biographical Information[edit]
Walter "Chick" Hartley played one game in the major leagues, for the 1902 Giants. He was the same age as teammate Christy Mathewson. Sporting Life reported that he had come from Wilmington, and said (perhaps tongue-in-cheek) that after the one major league game Hartley "packed up his duds and quit his job". In reality, Hartley played in the minors through 1914. In 1910-11, he hit over .320 for the Albany Senators.
He was the first major leaguer named Hartley, followed by Grover Hartley and Mike Hartley.
