Biographical Information[edit]

Mike Hartley was signed as a free agent for the St. Louis Cardinals by scout Marty Keough on November 27, 1981. Hartley pitched 202 games in the major leagues from 1989-1995. He pitched for the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1994 and for Nettuno in Serie A1 in 1998.

He was a coach for the Reno Silver Sox from 2005-2007. For 2008, Hartley was hired as head coach of the Heidenheim Heideköpfe in Bundesliga and would also pitch part-time, becoming the first former big leaguer to play in the Bundesliga. He went 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in 8 games and led the team to a 23-5 record, best in the southern division of Bundesliga-1, but they fell in the playoffs. Hartley remained with Heidenheim for 2009 and skippered them to their first title. He left the club after the 2010 season. He returned to Europe in 2012 as manager of Grosseto. He managed the Croatian national team in the 2014 European Championship.
