Biographical Information

Chan-kyu Im debuted in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2011, going 9-6 with 7 saves and a 4.46 ERA for the LG Twins. He was 4th in the league with 65 appearances and tied for 8th in saves. He got 26 of 91 votes for the KBO Rookie of the Year; the other 65 went to Young-seop Bae. He slipped a bit from there, to 1-5, 4.53 in 2012 and 1-1, 4.70 in 2013. He then spent two years in the military police to fulfill his mandatory military service. Returning to LG in 2016, he was 3-3 with a 6.51 ERA and 32 walks in 47 innings. In 2017, he had his best control season yet (45 BB in 124 1/3 IP) and posted a 6-10, 4.63 record. He tied for 6th in the league in losses.

Im was 11-11 with a save and a 5.77 ERA in the 2018 KBO. He tied for 10th in the league in wins and tied Chang-mo Koo and defending MVP Hyeon-jong Yang for 5th in losses. He thus may have been a surprising pick for the South Korean national team for the 2018 Asian Games. He started one game for the Gold Medal winners, against Hong Kong. He struck out eight in four innings, allowing four hits and two runs (including a Matthew Holliday homer) before Yong-chan Lee relieved. He tied Pil-joon Jang for the highest ERA on the champs but tied Yudai Aranishi for 7th in strikeouts in the main round of the Games.
