In 1979 the Philadelphia Phillies affiliated with the Northwest League team in Bend, OR. They named the new team the Central Oregon Phillies, becoming one of the first minor league teams to use a regional name instead of a city or state name. The team won the Southern Division their first year then beat the Walla Walla Padres in the championship. The club's top hitter was Julio Franco, who batted .328 with 10 homers (tied with Jim Durrman for the league lead). The team also had future Pittsburgh Pirates GM Dave Littlefield.

The next year the Phillies dominated the NWL in offense - Willie Darkis led the league in homers (25) and RBI (73), Juan Samuel was second in home runs (17) and Jerry Willard was among the leaders in average (.368) and RBI (59). The club went just 31-39. The next season they were nicknamed the Bend Phillies, not realizing they had been ahead of their time on the team name front.
