Castleton was known as Castleton State Normal School until 1947, Castleton Teachers College from 1947 to 1962, and Castleton State College until 2015. In July 2023, Castleton University was merged with Northern Vermont University (Lyndon and Johnson campuses) and Vermont Technical College to form Vermont State University. The new institution has five campuses, four of which have athletics.

Castleton won the North Atlantic Conference in 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014-2016.
