Biographical Information[edit]

Carlos Hernandez has pitched and coached in multiple countries.

Carlos debuted as a pro with the 1983 Salem Angels but fared poorly (7 BB, 7 R, 5 ER in 8 1/3 IP, 0-1). With the same club in 1984, he was lit up for a 7.84 ERA and 35 runs total in 31 innings. He walked 27 and hit 11 batters (most in the Northwest League in that latter department). He wrapped up his US career with the 1985 Burlington Rangers at 3-1, 4.82 with 6 saves in 28 games. Control remained an issue with 18 walks in 28 innings. He pitched for BBC Grosseto in Italy's Serie A1 in 1996-1997. The first season, he was 10-4 with a 2.74 ERA and a .209/.274/.278 batting line. He was four wins behind league leader Diego Ricci and only .09 behind ERA leader Luis Lunar. He fell to 2-8, 4.67 in his return engagement in Europe.

Hernandez coached for Lara in Venezuela's Paralella League (2000), the VSL Cardinals (2001-2002), Magallanes in the Paralella League (2003), in Italy (2004), in Nicaragua (2007-2008) and in Italy again (2008). He was pitching coach for the VSL Mariners from 2009-2014. He was slated to return to the VSL in 2015 but the Mariners closed their Venezuelan academy due to unrest in Venezuela and transferred the team to the Dominican Republic. Hernandez moved with the players and served as the pitching coach for the DSL Mariners 2. Hernandez was pitching coach of the DSL Twins in 2018 and the GCL Twins in 2019. He was scheduled to be pitching coach for the newly re-minted Fort Myers Mighty Mussels in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Hernandez coached the Mighty Mussels in 2021-2022, Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2023 and Wichita Wind Surge in 2024.
