Biographical Information[edit]
Southpaw pitcher Carl Grovom played in the minor leagues from 1986 to 1991. Despite posting a .588 winning percentage and a 3.51 ERA, he never advanced beyond Double-A.
Taken by the Houston Astros in the 20th round of the 1986 amateur draft, Grovom was signed by scout Reggie Waller and began his professional career that year. He pitched for the Auburn Astros, going 4-2 with a 4.16 ERA in 17 games (14 starts).
He split 1987 between the Charleston Wheelers (12-6, 2.44 ERA, 26 G) and the Columbus Astros (0-2, 12.15 ERA, 2 G), going a combined 12-8 with a 2.80 ERA in 28 games (26 starts). His four shutouts paced the South Atlantic League, while his six complete games tied for third most. He also finished third in wild pitches with 19.
In 1988, Grovom spent most of the year with the Osceola Astros (11-6, 2.72 ERA, 23 G), though he spent a spell with the Columbus squad as well (2-0, 4.29 ERA, 5 G). In 28 games (27 starts), he went 13-6 with a 2.92 ERA.
On October 20, 1988, the Astros sent Grovom to the Cincinnati Reds as the player to be named later in a June 19 deal that sent Buddy Bell to the Astros. He split 1989 between the Greensboro Hornets (3-3, 4.37 ERA, 11 G) and the Chattanooga Lookouts (2-3, 4.54 ERA, 6 G), going a combined 5-6 with a 4.44 ERA in 17 games.
The following year, Grovom spent considerable time in the bullpen, going 5-4 with a 6.40 ERA in 17 games (eight starts) for the Cedar Rapids Reds (4-1, 3.94 ERA, 8 G) and Lookouts (1-3, 10.35 ERA, 9 G).
He returned to the Astros system in 1991, going 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 25 games (three starts) for Osceola (0-1, 1.51 ERA, 15 G) and the Jackson Generals (1-1, 3.63 ERA, 10 G). In 53 innings, he had 52 strikeouts.
He resurfaced in 1995 when the Minnesota Twins signed him as a strike-replacement player. He never pitched in their system during the regular season, returning to his job as a substitute teacher.
Overall, Grovom went 40-28 with a 3.51 ERA in 132 games (92 starts). He had 535 strike outs in 618 1/3 innings of work.
