Canisius University was known as Canisius College until August 2023. The school has sponsored baseball since 1903. Billy Goeckel, the first major leaguer out of Canisius, had quite a life as a ballplayer, composer, lawyer and politician. Pitcher John Axford, major league coach Danny Carnevale, college coach Matt Clingersmith, minor league executive Michael Buczkowski, minor league players Kevin Mahoney and Connor Panas, minor league player and college coach Bob MacKinnon, Olympian Jack Clement and umpire Sean Cunningham also went here. Luke Urban coached football and basketball here.
