Biographical Information

First baseman Cal Emery played more than a decade in the minors and had a cup of coffee in the big leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1963. After his playing days, he was a minor league manager and major league coach.

Emery attended Penn State and won the Most Outstanding Player Award in the 1957 College World Series. Signed by the Phillies the next year, he hit .323 with 27 home runs for the Des Moines Demons in 1959 and was named MVP of the Three-I League. He reached the majors briefly in 1963, hitting .158 in 16 games, while wearing the number 9. He then returned to the minors, hitting .400 with 10 homers for the Eugene Emeralds in 1969. He played for the Hankyu Braves in Japan in 1970 and then returned to the minors for the next two summers.

Following his playing days, Emery managed in the minors for parts of nine seasons, winning three league championships. He also served as a coach for the Chicago White Sox in 1988 and as a big league scout. In his later years, he lived in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and he died in 2010 at age 73.
