Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Cade Povich was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 3rd round of the 2021 amateur draft out of the University of Nebraska. On August 2, 2022, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles along with Yennier Cano and two other minor leaguers in return for pitcher Jorge López, who was being used as the Orioles' closer at the times. The Birds made out like thieves in this trade, as Cano quickly became a key member of their bullpen, and Povich went on to have a solid season in 2023, going 8-10, 5.04 in 28 starts between AA and AAA. He racked up 171 strikeouts in 126 2/3 innings against just 106 hits and was named an organizational All-Star after the season, finding himself among the top prospects of a farm system loaded with them.

He began the 2024 season with the Norfolk Tides and was named the International League's Pitcher of the Month for April. He was 5-1, 3.18 after 11 starts when he got the call to make his debut with Baltimore, in a mid-afternoon road game at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON, when the Orioles decided to push back Kyle Bradish by one day. He gave up just one walk to the Toronto Blue Jays over the first two innings, but in the 3rd walked two more batters before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made him pay for his generosity with a three-run homer to the opposite field. He allowed another run on a pair of bloop doubles in the 4th, and in the 6th gave up a single and a walk after one out before giving way to Dillon Tate. Unfortunately for him, Tate allowed both inherited runners to score, making it 6-1, making his final line look worse than he deserved. The Orioles came back to within a run of the Jays, but he was still saddled with a 6-5 loss. He had received enough advance warning about his debut that his parents were able to make it Toronto for the occasion, going from their hometown of Omaha, NE through Denver, CO to obtain an emergency passport in order to cross the border in time. In his second start on June 12th, he pitched six scoreless innings at home against the Atlanta Braves but failed to receive credit for his first big league victory as the O's 4-2 win was only achieved in the late innings. That elusive first win came in his fifth start, on June 29th against the Texas Rangers, when he gave up two runs over five innings in a 6-5 win. He made the best start of his young career on September 3rd when he pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out ten batters in handing the Chicago White Sox their 12th straight loss, 9-0, a win that also put the Orioles back into first place in the AL East.
