Biographical Information

Bud Weiser had the middle name Budson, so Bud was a natural nickname. The beer Budweiser had been invented long before he was born, so that may have been a factor as well. In fact, the St. Louis Cardinals, according to Weiser's SABR biography, did acquire him at one point (Budweiser beer was made in St. Louis), but Weiser wasn't interested at the time.

Bud was born in Shamokin, PA, only a few years after the Coveleski brothers, Stan Coveleski and Harry Coveleski.

Bud played 12 seasons in pro ball, including several seasons with the Charlotte Hornets early in his pro career. In 1914 he hit .333 with 18 home runs for Charlotte.

In an exhibition game in 1918 with the Steelton, PA amateur team, Bud Weiser went five for five at the plate, hitting for the cycle with two singles, one double, one triple and a home run. The article about the game also suggests his nickname was due to the famous beer of the same name. See here: [1]

After hitting .339 for the 1923 Binghamton Triplets, he became player-manager for the team the following year.
