Bud Herseth
Arthur "Bud" Herseth was a co-owner of the San Francisco Giants with Bob Lurie. The two combined to buy the team on March 4, 1976, thwarting an attempt by Labatt Breweries to purchase the team in order to relocate it to Toronto, ON. The new owners vied to keep the team in the Bay area.
Herseth was a meat-packer and cattle rancher from Arizona. At the time of the purchase, he admitted to knowing little about baseball. He was a last-minute recruit by Lurie, who needed a financial partner to put up half the same price. Lurie had originally wanted to recruit Bob Short for that role, but other major league owners objected because of Short's checkered past. Forced to find someone else to invest before a deadline to complete the sale, he turned to Herseth. Herseth made a few appearances in spring training in 1976, but does not seem to have played an active role after that. He sold his stock to Lurie early in 1979, after complaining that the team had lost significant money since he had come on as an investor.
