Biographical Information

Pitcher Brady Rodgers was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 3rd round of the 2012 amateur draft, out of Arizona State University; the scout was Mike Brown. He had earlier been a 39th round choice by the Milwaukee Brewers out of high school in 2009, but did not sign.

He began his pro career in 2012 on a very strong note with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League, going 7-2, 2.89 in 12 starts. He then played for three teams in 2013: the Lancaster JetHawks of the California League, the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League and the Oklahoma City RedHawks of the Pacific Coast League. Most of his work was for Lancaster, though, as he made only one appearance at each of the other two stops. Pitching in one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in organized baseball, he went 10-8, 5.38 in 27 games (18 starts), logging 112 innings. In 2014, he was mainly with Corpus Christi, pitching another game for Oklahoma City. In the AA Texas League, he went 5-12, 4.77 in 26 games in spite of a solid 87/19 K/W ratio in 120 2/3 innings. In 2015, he was 9-7, 4.51 for the Fresno Grizzlies of the PCL, as the Astros had switched their AAA affiliate. He logged 115 2/3 innings in 21 games - all starts - and struck out 89 while walking 25.

On March 27, 2016, while in spring training with the Astros, he was given the ball to start the second of two exhibition games against the San Diego Padres at Estadio Fray Nano in Mexico City. To say that things did not go well would be an understatement: he could not get out of the 1st inning, allowing 8 runs, including homers by Jabari Blash, Adam Rosales and Jon Jay as the Astros went down, 21-6. He then returned to Fresno where he was 12-4, 2.86 in 22 starts, logging 132 innings and striking out 116 against 23 walks. He was called up to Houston when rosters expanded in September and made his major league debut on September 3rd, pitching two-thirds of an inning in relief. He must have experienced flashbacks to his unfortunate start in Mexico, as the Texas Rangers tagged him for five runs on as many hits and a hit by pitch, leaving with with an ERA of 67.00.

Rodgers missed almost the entire 2017 season - and the Astros' run to the first World Series championship in franchise history - after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 2nd. He had made three starts at Fresno before experiencing discomfort in his elbow.
