Boris Rothermundt was the first French baseball player to come to the US for college ball.
Rothermundt debuted for the French national team in the 1995 European Championship, walking four and allowing four runs in two innings and having the club's highest ERA. He improved to 1-0, 2.70 in the 1997 European Championship, finishing third on France in ERA behind Jean-Philippe Miet and Maxime Leblanc.
In the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, Boris allowed four runs in six innings and lost his only start. During the 1999 European Championship, he only gave up one hit in 7 shutout innings to pick up a win over Sweden. France won its first Medal ever at a European Championship (Bronze).
Boris attended college in the US in 1998, playing for the College of Marin.
Boris was atrocious in the 2001 Baseball World Cup, giving up hits to 7 of 12 batters he faced and 6 runs in 2 1/3 IP; his 23.14 ERA was not France's highest as Miet had a 63.00. He apparently was primarily a pinch-runner or defensive sub in the 2003 European Championship, appearing in five games and only getting one at-bat, one putout, one assist and pitching to two batters (one hit, one out).
He had a brief stint as the manager of the Rouen Huskies in 2006.
The latter part of his career has been spent developing the next generation of French baseball players. Rothermundt later became a pitching coach for France, serving in that role in the 2007 European Championship. He also teaches his craft at the Pôle Toulouse (one of the two French baseball academies). He often serves as a coach for the national teams in international competitions. For example, he went to China with the Senior team in 2008 for the Pre-Olympic test event.
As of the 2009 season, he was a pitching coach for both the Junior and Senior National teams. Also in '09, he was an assistant coach for the U19 Junior team at the 2009 Open international de Rouen tournament. He coached for France again in the 2010 World Junior Championship, 2014 European Championship and 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
Working with the FFBSC, Rothermundt has co-authored a technical document about pitching in baseball, designed to be used by coaches across France. He was named the Confederation of European Baseball's Director of MLB Relations in 2017, a new role designed for better cooperation between European baseball organizations and MLB.
