Biographical Information[edit]
Billy Hart had a record of 12-8 in his one season in the majors. That was in 1890, the year of 3 leagues. Hart pitched for the 1890 St. Louis Browns of the American Association, and his ERA was exactly the same as the team ERA.
Hart is not to be confused with Bill Hart, a pitcher who also was in the American Association, a few years before Billy Hart. Adding to the confusion, Billy Hart was listed as Joe Hart in early editions of the Baseball Encyclopedia.
Billy pitched at one point for a team in Urbana, according to the SABR biography of Dummy Hoy, who is said to have hit well against Billy. This was apparently in 1888 or earlier. In 1889, Billy pitched for the Minneapolis Millers.
The 1890 Browns did pretty well, finishing third in the league. They had 5 managers that year, and the following year, none of them returned as manager. Other than Jack Stivetts and Joe Neale, the whole pitching staff was different also.
