Biographical Information[edit]
Bill MacKenzie has been a player, coach, manager and scout in several decades in baseball. As a scout, he signed three stars for the Montreal Expos.
He started his career with Lakeland Tigers in the Florida State League as a catcher in the late 1960's. In 1967, he was 13 for 54 between two clubs. He was just 8 for 65 with a double, 3 walks and 3 errors for the 1968 Dubuque Royals. He joined the West Palm Beach Expos in 1969 and went 12 for 44 with 5 walks and a double. A broken shoulder forced him to retire after only a year with the club. Overall, he hit .202 in 3 seasons in the minor leagues.
After leaving the Expos organization, he worked for Baseball Canada as the coach of the national team for seven years. Notably, he was a coach for the Canadian delegation at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. He also managed Canada in the 1978 Amateur World Series. 1979 Pan American Games and 1983 Pan American Games.
MacKenzie would then return to the Expos family as a scout for seven years. He spent another eight years as a scout with the Colorado Rockies. As a scout he was responsible for the discovery and signing of Tim Raines, Matt Stairs and Larry Walker.
He also spent some time as a consultant for two baseball bat manufacturers. In 2010, he became the head coach for the Ottawa Fat Cats in the Intercounty Baseball League for one season.
