Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Bill Johnson played parts of two seasons in the majors.

A three-sport star in high school, Johnson signed with the Philadelphia Phillies and made his pro debut that summer with the Central Oregon Phillies, going 4-4 with a 4.93 ERA in 27 appearances. He recorded 12 saves for the Spartanburg Phillies the following season, and in 1982 he went 8-3 with a 1.81 ERA and 13 saves for the Peninsula Pilots. He began 1983 with the Double A Reading Phillies before being dealt to the Chicago Cubs in May, along with Dick Ruthven, for Willie Hernandez. After spending most of the summer with the Midland Cubs, he earned a September call-up to the majors. In 10 relief appearances for Chicago, he went 1-0 with a 4.38 ERA. He spent most of 1984 with the Triple A Iowa Cubs before getting another cup of coffee with Chicago in September. He was back with Iowa in 1985 but out of baseball by the end of the 1986 season.

Following his retirement as a player, he moved back to his hometown of Wilmington, DE, where he worked in the beverage industry for Cott Beverages, Coca Cola and KIK. He coached youth baseball in his spare time and was an avid golfer. He also spend a lot of time at his secondary residence in North Myrtle Beach, SC. He passed away early in 2018 at the age of 57.
