Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Burgo had a nice cup of coffee for the Philadelphia Athletics during wartime (1943), when he logged 70 at bats and hit .371. The next year, 1944, in 88 at bats, he hit .239. Bill struck out only four times in 174 plate appearances, thus putting him among the best ever for lowest strikeout percentage. [1] The SABR article about George Kell's debut in 1943 states that Connie Mack fielded an all-rookie lineup on September 28th and Burgo was the clean-up hitter. He had led the Interstate League that year in home runs and RBI. Burgo rapped three hits that day, including a home run. [2] He also played for the Toledo Mud Hens in 1944, part of a twelve-season minor league career.
