Biographical Information

William Jackson "Bill" Bartley pitched in the majors in 1903, and 1906-1907. Most of his games were with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1907, when he pitched 15 games with an ERA of 2.24 for manager Connie Mack.

Bartley was only 18 when he came up in 1903 for one game with the New York Highlanders, in which he pitched 3 innings, giving up no earned runs but four unearned runs. However, the Sporting Life issue of September 26, 1903 called him a Texas League 20-year-old pitcher, whose father was captain of the workhouse guard in Cincinnati, OH.

The minor league database page for him does not show him as pitching in the Texas League in 1903 (or for any other league), but a later issue of Sporting Life shows a "J. Bartley" reserved for 1904 by the Beaumont team of the South Texas League - Bartley's middle name started with a "J", so possibly he was with Beaumont in 1903. In fact, looking at the 1903 Beaumont Oil Gushers page, both Bill and Jack Bartley are listed as being on the team.
