Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Abernathie played one game in the majors for the Cleveland Indians. Dealing on September 27, 1952, he earned a save despite allowing three runs on four hits (including Walt Dropo's 29th homer of the season) in an 11-6 Indians drubbing of the Detroit Tigers. He fared okay with a different set of Indians, the Indianapolis Indians of the American Association, that season, going 11-9 in 34 games and 164 innings. He tossed 7 complete games while starting 21 times for manager Gene Desautels. He allowed 182 hits and 62 walks while striking out 51 with a 5.27 ERA for the sixth-place Indy club. In 1957, Abernathie appeared in 45 games for the pennant-winning San Francisco Seals, compiling a 13-2 record with a Pacific Coast League-leading winning percentage (.867). He died on February 19, 2006 in Yucaipa, CA and is buried at the Montecito Memorial Park in Colton, CA, according to a SABR publication.
