Benji Grigsby was 9-3 in 26 games at San Diego State University in 1992 with 7 saves in 26 games and 107 SO in 79 IP. In June of that year, he was drafted in the first round of the 1992 amateur draft (#20 overall) by the Oakland A's. In his first season he was 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA in 3 starts for the AZL Athletics, with a 1/7 BB/SO ratio in 11 IP. In 1993, Grigsby pitched for the Modesto A's in the California League and went 5-6 with a 4.78 ERA in 10 starts and 29 relief appearances. He had a 42/72 BB/SO ratio in 90 IP. Grigsby split 1994 between Modesto and the AA Huntsville Stars. He was 4-1 with a 3.31 ERA and a 18/49 BB/SO ratio in 65 IP with Modesto, and 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA and a 23/30 BB/SO ratio in 47 IP for Huntsville. He made 15 starts and 18 relief stints for the year with 5 saves. Grigsby spent all of 1995 in Huntsville, with only 6 starts among his 30 games. He was 3-5 with a 4.01 ERA and a 20/55 BB/SO ratio in 76 IP with 3 saves. Grigsby made it to AAA in 1996 with the Edmonton Trappers. In his last year in the A's chain, Grigsby was 0-3 with a 7.25 ERA and a 7/15 BB/SO ratio in 22 IP. He made 3 starts and 8 relief appearances.
