Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Austin Shenton grew up in the Pacific Northwest before exiling himself to Florida to complete his college career at Florida International University. He was first drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 34th round of the 2016 amateur draft, then after going to college, by his hometown team the Seattle Mariners in the 5th round of the 2019 amateur draft.

He played in the Seattle system from 2019 to 2021, sitting out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. On July 29, 2021, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays along with P J.T. Chargois in return for Diego Castillo. After a mediocre season in AA with the Montgomery Biscuits in 2022, when he hit .232 in 52 games, he broke out in 2023 by belting 45 doubles and 29 homers in 134 games between Montgomery and the AAA Durham Bulls. His slash line was .304/.423/.584 with 102 runs and 99 RBIs. He was named the Southern League Player of the Month for June.

Shenton made the Rays' roster out of spring training in 2024 due to an injury to Jonathan Aranda, who was projected to be the back-up first baseman behind defending batting champ Yandy Diaz. He made his debut on March 31st as a defensive substitute for Diaz in a 9-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, going 0 for 1.
