Biographical Information[edit]

Austin Hubbard began 2013 in AA.

Amateur Career[edit]

Hubbard was 7-2 with two saves and 99 K in 58 2/3 IP as a high school senior; he also hit .415 and was named All-State. As a quarterback, his team went unbeaten and he set school records for career and season passing yards, touchdowns and completions. He was named the Alabama 5A player of the year for football. He was 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA as a freshman at Auburn. He fell to 1-1, 6.27 as a sophomore. As a junior, though, he made major progress, going 3-3 with 12 saves and a 4.20 ERA. He tied Matty Ott for the Southeastern Conference in saves and had the fourth-most saves in Auburn single-season history. He struck out 56 in 40 2/3 IP; despite being a reliever, he was second on the staff in whiffs.

Minors[edit]

Austin was picked by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 14th round of the 2010 amateur draft; Milt Hill was the scout. He was excellent that summer for the Hudson Valley Renegades (3-1, 12 Sv, 0.39). He tied for 4th in the New York-Penn League in saves. He was 5-3 with 10 saves and a 2.51 ERA for the '11 Bowling Green Hot Rods, striking out 68 in 68 innings. He was the Hot Rods' closer in 2012, going 2-6 with 23 saves, a 4.11 ERA and 72 whiffs in 57 innings. He was second in the Midwest League in saves (10 behind Ajay Meyer), led in K/9 IP and was third with 49 games pitched (trailing Heath Wyatt and Meyer). He led Rays farmhands in saves and tied Adam Liberatore for 5th in games pitched.
