Biographical Information[edit]

Shortstop Augie Schmidt was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 9th round of the 1979 amateur draft, but opted for college. He played college baseball at the University of New Orleans and was the third baseman for the U.S. when they won Gold in the 1981 World Games. He won the Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top amateur player in 1982. That same year, he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays with the second overall pick in the amateur draft.

Schmidt played three seasons in the minors for the Blue Jays before being traded to the San Francisco Giants along with Jim Gott for pitcher Gary Lavelle. His baseball career peaked out at the AAA level. He retired in 1986 and in 1987 was an assistant coach at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI, where his father, Augie Schmidt III, had been head coach from 1962 to 1980. He became the head baseball coach in 1988, and was still head coach as of 2020. Schmidt's father also played minor league ball, in 1956-1957 in the Boston Red Sox chain as a pitcher. A nephew, Gavin Lux reached the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019.
